What Is a Speed Post Consignment Number?
A quick guide to the 13 digit India Post tracking number
Every parcel booked at an India Post office gets a unique 13 digit consignment number. It is also called a tracking number or article number. You will find it printed on your postal receipt. Use it to check your parcel status at every stage of the journey.

The 13 Digit Format Explained
The first letter tells you the type of mail. For example, E is for Speed Post, R is for Registered Letter, C is for Registered Parcel, and A is for Speed Post bulk articles like PAN cards.
The second letter shows the state where the parcel was booked. For example, K stands for Karnataka, D stands for Delhi, M stands for Maharashtra, and T stands for Tamil Nadu.
The 9 digits in the middle are the unique serial number for your parcel. No two parcels in the same series share the same number. So your consignment is one of a kind.
The last two letters are the ISO country code. For every India Post parcel booked in India, this is always IN. That is the country code for India.
This format follows the Universal Postal Union (UPU) S10 standard. Postal services all over the world use this same format. That is why you can also track your India Post number on other courier websites when your parcel goes abroad.
India Post Tracking Number Prefixes
The first letter of your tracking number tells you the exact type of mail
Standard Speed Post booked by any person at a post office counter. This is the most common prefix for speed post tracking within India.

Speed Post booked in bulk by banks, NSDL and government offices. Your PAN card, Aadhaar or bank debit card usually comes with an "A" series number.

A Long And Rich History
India Post is officially known as the Department of Posts. It works under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India. It has one of the oldest postal service histories in the world. The modern setup started in 1854, when Lord Dalhousie built a single national postal system under the British East India Company.
After India became free in 1947, India Post grew fast. Today it runs a network of more than 1,65,000 post offices across the country. That makes it not just the largest postal network in India, but the largest postal network in the world by number of post offices.

The reach of India Post is huge. Out of 1,65,000+ post offices, about 90% are in rural India. That makes it a lifeline for people in far off villages where private courier services do not go. With over 500,000 postal staff and a mix of vehicles, bikes, boats and even trekking teams for the toughest routes, India Post covers every corner of the country.

1 Letter Mail
Letter Mail lets you send written notes, small papers and light items within India and abroad. One letter can weigh up to 2 kg. Letters move through the regular postal network. For any important paper that needs proof of delivery, use Registered Post instead of a plain letter.
2 Book Packet
Book Packet lets you send books, pamphlets, magazines and printed papers at a lower rate. One packet can weigh up to 5 kg. It must contain only printed material. The wrap must be open enough for post office staff to check what is inside. This is a low cost way for schools, libraries and publishers to send books.
3 Parcel
Parcels are used to send goods, gifts and boxes. India Post offers two kinds of parcel service. Unregistered parcels can weigh up to 4 kg and do not come with a tracking number. Registered parcels can weigh up to 10 kg within India (and up to 20 kg for some types). They come with a consignment number and can be tracked at every point. For valuable items, always pick Registered Parcel.
4 Registered Newspaper
India Post gives a lower postage rate for newspapers and magazines that are registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI). Only titles with a valid RNI number can use this rate. This lets publishers send papers and magazines to their readers across India at very low postage cost, which keeps the press affordable for everyone.
5 Inland Letter Card
The Inland Letter Card is a single sheet pre stamped card sold at post offices. It is only for use within India. You cannot send it to another country. It can carry a message of up to 5 grams. It is one of the cheapest ways to send a written note within India and is very common in villages.
6 Post Card
A Post Card is a small pre printed card used for short notes. The standard size of an India Post post card is 14 cm by 9 cm. India Post offers plain post cards and picture post cards. Post cards are the cheapest way to send a message by post and have been in use in India since the late 1800s. They are delivered by the regular postal network with no tracking.
7 Blind Literature Packet
As a support for blind and visually impaired people, India Post lets you send blind literature (such as Braille books, embossed writing and audio recordings) fully free of cost. One packet can weigh up to 7 kg and is sent with zero postage. It must be sent by or to a known blind welfare institution, or by a blind person. This is one of the most valued social services from India Post.
8 Registration
Registration is an extra service you can add to letters and parcels for better safety and proof. When you register a mail item, India Post keeps a record of it at every step from booking to delivery. The person who gets the mail must sign for it, which serves as legal proof of delivery. A registered item comes with a unique consignment number (often starting with RR or RP) and can be tracked online during transit.
9 Insurance
India Post offers insurance for parcels that carry valuable items. You can insure your parcel for its stated value at the time of booking. If the item is lost or damaged, India Post will pay you up to the insured amount. Insurance is offered for values up to ₹1,00,000 (one lakh rupees) at selected post offices. To use this service, the item must also be sent as a registered article. The fee depends on the value of what is inside.
10 Value Payable Post (VPP)
Value Payable Post (VPP) is the cash on delivery service from India Post. It lets a sender ship a parcel and collect the payment through the post office at the time of delivery. The post office takes the stated amount from the buyer and sends it back to the seller. The top amount you can collect under VPP is ₹5,000 per article. VPP is used by small shops, artists and sellers who ship to buyers in other cities. It was in use long before modern online COD services.
